NGC 6946 - The Fireworks Galaxy

NGC 6946, also known as Caldwell 12 is a face-on grand-design spiral galaxy. We see it as it was 25 million years ago, because its distance to Earth (you guessed it!) is about 25 million light-years.

There were ten supernovae observed in this galaxy in the last hundred years, earning the nickname "Fireworks Galaxy" for NGC 6946.
